Beds in the Birdies Urban Range are made from Redcor (also known as corten) steel. Redcor willnaturally rustover a 6 week period, providing abeautiful, uniquepatinaandlong-term protectionfor your raised bed.
When you receive your Birdies Urban raised bed, the panels will have a non-hazardous mineral oil coating applied to prevent premature rusting, ensuring durability and longevity under all environmental conditions.
The Birdies Difference

24" Tall:Compared to most beds at less than a foot tall, these beds offer improved pest resistance and season extension. They also allow for better soil life, drainage, and root growth.

Rust and Corrosion Resistant:Over time Redcor steel develops a stable oxide layer on its surface known as ‘patina’. When exposed to alternating wet and dry conditions the color of the patina changes organically over time giving it a striking appearance. These will outlast even the highest-quality wooden raised beds.
No Contamination:Unlike low-grade plastic, chemically treated wood, or poorly manufactured copycats, Birdies Redcor steel does not leach or break down over time in any significant way, meaning these beds are completely safe to grow food in.

Q.Will the beds get too hot in the summer or hot climates?
No, they won't, for a few reasons:
- The superior reflectivity of the material keeps most of the heat from ever passing through into the soil.
- The bulk of soil within the bed quickly absorbs and dissipates heat from the thin, but strong stainless steel edges.
Compared to standard wooden, concrete, or plastic beds -especiallyif made from a dark color or material -Birdies beds outperform in maintaining even and cool soil temperature.
Q.Are the beds bottomless?
Yes, the beds are bottomless. This allows water to escape and removes the need to drill any drainage holes.
By connecting the soil below the bed to the soil you add to the bed, you build stronger soil life and your garden is healthier as a result.
Q. What are the beds made from? Will they rust?
The beds are made from Redcor (corten) steel, which has a non-hazardous mineral oil coating applied to prevent premature rusting, ensuring durability and longevity under all environmental conditions.
Redcor will gradually develop a natural, protective rust patina over a six-week period after installation. If you would prefer to do it faster, we include instructions with your kit.All ingredients needed to complete this process are available from your local supermarket.
Q. Can I place the beds on hard surfaces such as concrete?
If you're placing your bed on pavers, concrete, tiles, or anything you don't want to stain, we recommend using a bed liner or geotextile fabric.
To use, place your raised bed in position, then place the fabric on the bottom of the bed from the inside. Run excess fabric up each side and then fill your bed with soil. The fabric allows water to drain freely, but keeps soil from touching your surface.
Optional: To further protect the surface, place thick builder's plastic down before placing your bed into position. Once the bed is filled, the excess plastic can be trimmed around the edge of the garden bed with an Exacto knife.
Q. What is the thickness of your metal beds?
The Birdies Urban beds are constructed of 22-gauge cold-rolled Redcor steel, used in Australia in architecture, landscaping, and outdoor decor for decades and decades. Redcor steel develops a protective patina of rust that prevents further metal decay, leading to an extremely long lifespan.
Q. Can the clip on safety strip handle freezing temps?
