• HOW TO GROW

Sowing: In cooler climates, start Black Crown watermelon seeds indoors a month before transplanting. Plant three seeds per peat pot, 1/4" deep, maintaining soil temperature at 80-85°F. Thin to the strongest seedling and transplant after the last frost. In warmer climates, direct sow when soil reaches 75°F, planting six seeds per hill and thinning to the strongest two or three. Ensure full sun and rich, loose soil. Young seedlings may benefit from black plastic to warm up the soil.

Growing: Apply mulch to control weeds and protect melons once vines develop. Keep soil moist until fruit begins to grow, then water only if soil dries out completely. Monitor for pests.

Harvesting: Test for ripeness by knocking on the watermelon for a dull thump and checking the underside for a rich yellow color. Watermelons typically keep for several weeks in a cool place.

Seed Saving: Harvest seeds when the melon is ripe, wash to remove residue, dry for a week, and store in a cool place for up to four years.
